Brief Information & Main Objectives: Jean Monnet Chair is a prestigious award and a teaching post with a specialization in European Union studies for university professors. Jean Monnet Chairs are named after Jean Monnet (1888- 1979), one of the main architects of European integration. As a French politician and diplomat, he drafted the Schuman Plan (1950) that sketched a blueprint for the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), a predecessor institution of today’s European Union. He went on to serve as the first President of the High Authority of the ECSC (1952-55), which would later become the European Commission. In 2014, the Head of our Department Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mukhtar Hajizada was awarded the Jean Monnet Chair. The mission of the Jean Monnet Chair of our Department is to further deepen teaching in EU studies by introducing non-formal and innovative teaching techniques in the instruction. In addition to teaching, the project intends to promote research and learning on European integration and to promote discussion on contemporary European issues among students and the general public; and to facilitate the exchange of expertise among the scholars of EU studies. We intend to foster research cooperation among the Azerbaijani scholars and postgraduate researchers by providing the services of the EU Studies Centre and by establishing a platform of researchers and scholars. The collaborative initiative within the framework of this project will culminate in an international conference, the first of its kind in Azerbaijan, to promote discussion on European integration. The conference will bring together scholars and practitioners. We regularly host a series of events, titled European Seminars, delivered by authoritative experts, practitioners, scholars and professors in EU matters to share their expertise with the Azerbaijani audience. The series are free and open to the academic community and the public. Learn more about Jean Monnet and the history of the European Commission here.
