The School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences is one of the first Schools created at Khazar University. It was decided to establish the School of Humanities in 1992 at Khazar University, which was founded in 1991. Two departments were established at the School in the first place: “Department of English Language and Literature” and “Department of Journalism”, they were followed by the Departments of “Philosophy and Sociology” and “History”, created as multidisciplinary academic units, which provide teaching and research of various humanitarian and social sciences.
Since 1995, Departments of "Azerbaijani Language and Literature" and "Political Sciences and International Relations" started operating at the School. Such majors as Azerbaijan Language and Literature Philology and Political Science, International Relations and Regional Studies were established under the Schools’ supervision. Since 2007, the Department of History has been renamed to the Department of History and Archeology.
Since 1998, initial efforts had been made to establish a secondary school under Khazar University. Previously, a small class was opened and thus University gained its first experience in primary education. Subsequently, elementary classes were gradually organized and the "Dunya" School began functioning under the University. In 2003, a competition for the bachelor’s degree in Primary Education Methodology was announced and admission to this major was started. Simultaneously with the admission to this major, the teacher training started at Khazar University. Since 2005, the School was renamed as School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Due to the diversification and expanding of the specialties within the faculty, in the second semester of 2006, a bachelor’s program in the "Primary Education Methodology” was incorporated into the newly established Faculty of Education in order to provide a better quality of education in this field.
Since 2010, the School began to cover even broader areas and to incorporate different areas of science. Along with the positive effects of rapid change and development in the world, the need for psychologists is also rising day by day. For this reason, being established in 2010, the Department of Psychology continues its activity by providing teaching in undergraduate and graduate levels. Since its establishment, the University has been implementing multilingualism and thus starting from 2015, in order to provide a better quality of teaching of German, French, Italian and other European languages, including Eastern languages, such as Chinese, Korean, Arabic and Persian languages and aiming to conduct research in the field of world languages and cultures, the “Department of Languages and Cultures” has been re-established on the basis of the existing “Eastern Languages and Religious Studies” and “Modern Languages and Comparative Literature” departments. One of the most rapidly growing demand in modern times is the “Design” specialty. Bachelor’s degree program in Design is one of the smallest and youngest majors in the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences and it is under the supervision of the "Music and Fine Arts" Department. In particular, the specialty was initiated by Professor Hamlet Isakhanli, the Founder of Khazar University and Chairman of its Board of Directors and Trustees, in 2015, at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (now School of Science and Engineering) and from 2016, continues to function under the "School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences".
From 2006 to 2019 academic years, due to the excessive expansion of science fields under the “School of Education”, and further improving in terms of the quality of education and its organization in line with the fields of science the "School of Humanities and Social Sciences" and "School of Education" previously operating as two separate faculties, were then merged reorganizing both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. As a result of this merger, the teaching of majors within the field of Natural Sciences at the School of "Education" was assigned to the School of “Sciences and Engineering". Majors in Humanities, Education and Social Sciences were consolidated under the School of "Humanities, Education and Social Sciences".
Within the framework of the reorganization process held in February 2019 as part of the development and improvement strategy at Khazar University, the Department of “Political Science and International Relations” and Department of “Philosophy and Sociology” were consolidated and named as the Department of “Political Science and Philosophy”.
