The Department of Azerbaijani Language and Literature was established in May 1995. Azerbaijani language and literature was taught as a non-specialized subject at the undergraduate level for students of all faculties of Khazar University.
Since 2006, an undergraduate program has been offered for teaching Azerbaijani language and literature and Azerbaijani philology, and since 2009, a master's and doctoral program for both specialties has been offered.
From February 1, 2019, the Department of Languages and Literatures was established at the base of the Department of Azerbaijani Language and Literature for the purpose of increasing teaching and research work and improving management.
The main task of the Department of Languages and Literatures of Khazar University is to teach the Azerbaijani language, Azerbaijani and World literature in all faculties of the university, and prepare bachelor's, master's and doctoral students in these subjects. The Department of Languages and Literatures also teaches German, French, Italian, and Chinese as a second foreign language.
Azerbaijani language and literature is taught as a non-specialized subject in the "Natural Sciences and Engineering", "Economics and Management" and "Humanities, Education and Social Sciences" faculties of the university. In the aforementioned faculties, the department prefers general information and introductory content in the teaching of the subjects of Azerbaijani language and Azerbaijani literature.
The goal of the department at the undergraduate level of the faculty of "Humanities, Education, Social Sciences" in the field of "Teaching Azerbaijani language and literature" is to prepare high-level, professional teachers to teach students the Azerbaijani language and literature (including world literature) with all its stages and periods, sections and fields. and organize teaching in a practical way.
The aim of the department at the undergraduate level of the "Azerbaijani language and literature (philology) of the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences" is to teach students the grammatical structure and divisions of the modern Azerbaijani language, as well as to provide information about linguistics and the history of the literary language, to teach the students about the history of Azerbaijani literature (including the World literature) in chronological order, to teach the life and creativity of writers and poets who lived in different periods, and to provide preliminary theoretical information.
The main goal of the department is to teach undergraduates studying at the master's level in both majors of the Faculty of "Humanities, Education and Social Sciences" in depth the separate problems of language and literature, to increase their theoretical preparation, to instill the ability to analyze and apply, and work on the text.
The main direction of the department's activity is to raise the general theoretical preparation of those studying at the doctorate level, and to direct them to research work on separate problems of language and literature.
The Department of Languages and Literatures considers conducting research on various directions and problems of language and literature, preparing teaching materials for students, organizing scientific seminars and discussions, symposiums and conferences, and involving students in research studies as one of the main directions of its scientific activity.
The department considers close participation in the social life of the university, organizing literature discussions, poetry evenings, recitation competitions, ensuring students' activity in the events prepared by the university as an important part of the action plan.
