About us

The Department of Life Sciences organizes and supervises the teaching, methodical, and educational work of bachelor's students (BS) in biology education, chemistry and biology education, and veterinary medicine, as well as doctoral students' research activities.

Mission

The department's main goal is to provide students with undergraduate programs in biology education, chemistry and biology education, and veterinary medicine, to ensure a high-quality teaching process and to prepare highly educated, scientific-pedagogical personnel capable of developing the community and thinking critically. Also, it is to create conditions for the fulfillment of doctoral students' research works by the rules and to participate in the development of new Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) programs.

The department functions in compliance with the Republic of Azerbaijan's Legislation, the Law on Education, normative legislative acts, guidelines, and methodological instructions of the Republic of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Science and Education, as well as the Charter of Khazar University.

History

The Department of Life Sciences was founded on the base of the Biological Sciences department, and transferred from the School of Education to the School of Science and Engineering in February 2019. The Biological Sciences Department was established as a part of the Medical School in 1992. In 2010, the Department of Biological Sciences was transferred to the School of Education.

Academic programs

The Department of Life Sciences provides educational programs that match worldwide standards at both the undergraduate and doctorate levels. The department provides bachelor's level education in the Azerbaijan language, and doctoral-level education in Azerbaijan and English by highly qualified professors with local and international experience.

Our goals are to promote a general understanding of Life Sciences and provide curricula that prepare our students for education in biology, chemistry and biology, and veterinary medicine leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. This curriculum exposes the core fundamental disciplines of life sciences with different elective courses on topics such as genetics, stem cell biology, ecology, biostatistics, immunology, medical biology, animal anatomy, clinical diagnostic, veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, and the biology of the central nervous system.

Students are using the Center for Cell Pathology Research laboratory for their practical life sciences classes, and working on their research projects.

The Department offers graduate programs leading to a Doctor of Philosophy degree in different areas of Life Sciences, including Molecular Biology, İmmunology, Microbiology, Genetics and Biochemistry.

The Department of Life Sciences also provides electives to meet the General Education Requirements for courses at other schools within the university.
