ISBN Services

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique identifier which identifies one specific version of a book or item.

An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation of a book, for example, paperback and a hardcover edition of the same book will each have a different ISBN.

Khazar University is responsible for assigning ISBNs to items published in Azerbaijan.

Items for which an ISBN can be allocated:

  • printed books
  • publications that are not intended by the publisher to be updated regularly or continued indefinitely
  • educational/instructional films
  • audiobooks on CD, or DVD (talking books)
  • electronic publications either on physical carriers (such as machine-readable tapes, diskettes, or CD-ROMs) or on the internet (for download or streaming)
  • digitised copies of printed monographic publications
  • microform publications
  • educational or instructional software

Editions, reprints and reissues

  • An ISBN should be assigned the first time a book is published.
  • A separate ISBN must be assigned to every edition of a book, but not to an unchanged reprint of the same book
  • A reissued book is considered a different edition if it has a different format, such as microform or large print
  • it has a different binding, such as paperback or hardbound
  • the type has been reset
  • the title, author or publisher has changed
  • there has been a change in size, text or illustrations.

Items that do not require an ISBN:

  • ephemeral printed materials such as advertising matter and the like
  • printed music
  • art prints and art folders without title page and text
  • personal documents
  • software that is intended for any purpose other than educational or instructional
  • electronic bulletin boards
  • emails and other electronic correspondence
  • games
  • music sound recordings

Request an Azerbaijan ISBN

To request an ISBN, complete the ISBN Request form and email the completed form to [email protected]

When an ISBN is allocated it will be annotated on the form and the form returned to the requestor, usually within 3 working days

If you need an ISBN barcode for your publication, please let us know when completing the form. An ISBN barcode is the graphical representation of a book’s ISBN. Barcodes are used on physical books, allowing them to be machine read, and facilitating automated sales and inventory tracking – a requirement for most large retailers.

Lodging copies of your publication with the Library and Legal deposit

We ask that you lodge three copies of your publication with the Khazar University. Two copies should be sent to the Archive Unit, for lodging in the University Archive. One copy should be sent to the Library Cataloguing Team for adding to the Khazar University online catalogue and then will be located in National ISBN Agency Access Collection.

Please also advise the Library if your publication is to be made freely available online. The relevant URL will be added into the Library catalogue to accompany the details of the print publication.

The comprehensive collections of Azerbaijan publications formed in this way provide the means for research into all aspects of Azerbaijan life, culture, and artistic, commercial, technical and scientific endeavour.

No legal deposit required

Commercial advertising material, and publications produced for internal use are not included..
The ISBN Agency does not wish to receive

  • any publication of less than five pages
  • brochures and leaflets promoting University courses
  • pictures, maps, photographs – these are only required in the form of the publication in which they appear.

Copyright Declaration

If you are declaring copyright of the work and declaring that it is free from third party ownership, the copyright declaration form will be required.

If the edited publication is a collection of conference papers or journal articles then the Transfer of Ownership section on the copyright declaration form is required to prove permission has been sought from the authors.
